ALUMNI Q&A
from November 2024

What’s your name?

Kian Mertens

How many years did you attend ISHR?

13 years

What year did you graduate?

2018

What are you up to now?

I am about to complete my Bachelor of Science in Mechanical Engineering, specializing in Automotive and Motorsports Engineering, at Leibniz University in Hanover. Alongside my studies, I have been an active member of the university’s Formula Student Team, where we design, build, and race our own formula cars. This experience has enabled me to apply theoretical knowledge in real-world scenarios and gain valuable hands-on expertise.

What was your favorite subject at ISHR?

P.E. and Physics

In what ways do you feel ISHR prepared you for what came next?

Thanks to the many years of open-minded education at ISHR, I graduated with exceptional communication skills and the ability to critically think about, evaluate, and accept the opinions and ideas of others. Additionally, I like to consider myself a self-critical person, always striving to become a better version of myself.

What was the biggest challenge you faced in adapting to life after ISHR?

Growing up in an environment where everyone was taught to be respectful toward others and approach them with an open mind, it was challenging to encounter, after graduating from ISHR, many people in the world who struggle to accept different views and critically think to form their own opinions on situations.

What advice would you give to current students or your former self?

It is important to stay true to yourself and not change who you are for others. Spend time with family and friends, and don’t hesitate to make the most of the time you have and seize opportunities that may not come again.

What’s your favorite memory from your time at ISHR?

My best memory of ISHR was the indoor soccer tournaments during primary school lunch breaks, made unforgettable by the legendary commentary and refereeing of the former head of primary school, Mr. Tony Pearson.
