Counselling Services

At ISHR, we believe that students thrive when they feel safe, connected, supported, and ready to learn. Our Counselling Department team works collaboratively with students, families, teachers, and school leaders to promote academic success, social-emotional wellbeing, and positive school engagement.

Through preventative, developmental, and responsive supports, school counsellors help students build the skills and resilience needed to navigate challenges and achieve their potential.

Our Approach

Our school counseling program is proactive and student-centered. We partner closely with teachers, staff and families to identify strengths, address barriers to learning, and ensure that every student has access to the support they need.

Support is delivered through:

  • School-wide social-emotional learning (SEL) and wellbeing initiatives
  • Classroom counseling lessons and preventative programming
  • Individual student planning and goal setting
  • Consultation and collaboration with parents, teachers, and external professionals
  • Crisis response and student safeguarding support
  • Short-term individual counseling
  • Referrals to community-based mental health providers when appropriate

School Counseling Support

School counselors provide short-term, goal-oriented support designed to help students address challenges that may impact their learning, wellbeing, or participation in school life. School counseling is educational in nature and focuses on building skills, identifying strengths, and helping students develop effective strategies for managing concerns.

When a student’s needs require ongoing therapeutic treatment or specialized mental health care, families may be supported in accessing appropriate community-based services and external providers.

Accessing Support

Students may seek support independently, be referred by a parent or caregiver, or be recommended by a teacher or other school staff member. We encourage students to reach out whenever they need support, guidance, or someone to talk with.

Confidentiality

Trust and confidentiality are essential components of the counseling relationship. Information shared with a school counselor is treated with care and respect and is shared only when necessary to support a student’s wellbeing or educational success.

There are circumstances in which confidentiality cannot be maintained. If a student is at risk of harm, or if there are concerns regarding the safety of the student or others, counselors are required to follow school safeguarding procedures and work with the appropriate members of the Child Protection Team to ensure student safety.
