WHERE ARE THEY NOW?

ALUMNI Q&A

from October 2025

What’s your name?

Maximilian Grützmacher

How many years did you attend ISHR?

4 Years

What year did you graduate?

2021

What are you up to now?

I am studying law at the LMU in Munich. I also work as a research assistant for a law firm in Berlin specialising in medical law. In my first year I worked as a barkeeper and failed all my classes, naturally. The following year, I completed the first two years of the programme together in order to catch up. After, I did just fine. Come the state exams, I picked capital markets and corporate law as my field of specialised study, where I, amongst other things, researched and wrote about the EU Listing Act. About work, what is most interesting, I can’t tell… Occasionally I write poetry.

What was your favorite subject at ISHR?

English Literature with Mr. Lowe

In what ways do you feel ISHR prepared you for what came next?

English is very useful for my job

What was the biggest challenge you faced in adapting to life after ISHR?

The institutional indifference at a huge university: no one keeps track but yourself—you could just as well play golf all day and never see the inside of a lecture hall or the library.

What advice would you give to current students or your former self?

Learn how to study and actually do study—don’t just try to get by easily. Keep in mind what really counts, since the easy things will increasingly be done by computers.

What’s your favorite memory from your time at ISHR?

I can’t really think of a specific moment in time. What comes to mind is the feeling of a place where there is a genuine interest in who you are becoming.
